Here is some background information
concerning Radon and why you need to be concerned
Radon
You can neither see, smell or taste radon. But its risk to you and your family
is very real in your home. Radon is created through a natural process by which
off gassing of deposits deep in the ground under your house rise up through
cracks and fissures in the foundation of your home. Over time, breathing this
gas has been documented to increase the incidence of lung cancer. Furthermore,
if one smokes the increase in lung cancer rates are especially disturbing.
Why
Test for Radon?
Radon typically migrates up from ground sources to the surface above and into
your home through cracks and fissures in the foundation. Radon can enter the
home through other routes such as well water or sump areas. Radon does not
recognize the age of a home. Any home, whether old or new, basement or not, can
be susceptible to radon. A thorough comprehensive test is the only way to know
if you and your family are at risk from radon. The Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) recommends that a homeowner first conduct a short-term radon test.
Short-term analysis can be a relative inexpensive, simple procedure that
produces results quickly. The results will allow the homeowner or prospective
buyer to make an informed decision about radon, its presence, and develop a
cost effective method for reduction and mitigation that are based on sound
scientific analysis and takes into consideration the potential risk to your
family
Facts
Concerning Radon
The radiation emitted by radon is the exact same radiation emitted by
plutonium. A family whose home has radon levels of 4 pCi/l (pico curies per
liter) is exposed to approximately 35 times as much radiation as the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission allows if they were standing next to the fence of a
radioactive waste site.
Radon induced lung cancer is estimated to cost the United States over 2 billion
dollars per year in both direct and indirect health care costs based on
National Cancer Institute statistics of 14,000 annual radon lung cancer deaths.
